Fake blood to spice up your porch decorations? Uhhhh ...
A pool here, a splatter there - no Halloween home is complete without a healthy helping of oozing plasma. Thanks to Tom Nardone and his new book "Extreme Halloween" (Perigee, 2009), here's a recipe for the fake stuff that's so real it's, well, bloodcurdling.
I use a lot of fake blood and I am cheap. Therefore, I don't buy fake blood: I make it myself. Here's how you can make some, too.
4 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup cold water
One 32-ounce bottle corn syrup
About 20 drops red food coloring
About 20 drops blue food coloring
An empty 2-liter soda bottle (or other container to store your blood)
A funnel (to get this sticky liquid into your storage container)
1. Using a fork or whatever else you have handy, mix the cornstarch and cold water in a cereal bowl until the cornstarch has dissolved.
2. In a large pan over medium heat, combine the corn syrup and the cornstarch mixture, stirring until well mixed. Swirl in the red and blue food coloring, a few drops a time, until you achieve the color of blood.
3. When the mixture comes to a boil, turn off the heat and remove it from the burner. Let it cool, stirring occasionally.
4. When your fake blood is completely cool, pour it into the empty soda bottle and screw on the cap securely. It is super sticky but it will keep for well over a year.
