When it comes to keeping order in a house, the messy and the meticulous suffer the same space challenges. Here are some words of wisdom.
Choose your battle
Whether it's the entire garage or the junk drawer in the kitchen, pick one project to complete. "Choose the area that gives you the biggest headache right now and stick with it from beginning to end," says Olescia Hanson, spokeswoman for The Container Store.
Plan accordingly
Don't expect organization overnight. "Be realistic because if you aren't, you will get frustrated and give up," warns Hanson. Allowing for appropriate time manages expectations and maximizes results.
Color code for sanity
Think rainbow recognition system. "Using color enhances efforts. From each child having a different color toy box, to labeling bills, to taxes, it makes it easy for you to see where something belongs," says Hanson. Christina MacDonald of DRS & Associates offers an inside trick: "Use light colored paint on walls to make space appear bigger and airier." The appearance of more space adds to the illusion of organization.
Learn how to adapt
As we grow, our storage needs grow with us. "Select a system that adapts to the change of your needs," recommends Hanson.
