When it comes to cleaning house, people’s diligence, expectations and skills are as varied as the number of dust bunnies lurking under the sofa. But whatever your cleaning IQ is, expert advice sure can’t hurt. Randall Sandlin, the general manager of consumer experience and innovation at Electrolux Home and Care Products, can you help you get the most out of your vacuum.
Oh the Hair-or!
For those of us with four-legged friends, their hair trails can leave our ears hanging low. So if you’re looking to rid your upholstery of all that pet hair, make sure to purchase a vacuum complete with power brush. “There are specific vacuums designed for pet owners that include grips within the brushes,” Sandlin says. ”Also look for charcoal filters to reduce odors, and a bagless system that’s easy to clean for those with allergies.”
New Heights
From ceiling fans to high crown molding, the places vacuums need to reach are infinite. If you’re in the market for a vacuum with limitless access, buy one with the necessary tools to get to these difficult spots. “Look for attachments that telescope to these hard-to-reach places,” Sandlin says. Different tools can help you clean various surface areas and make it easier to clean high moldings, ceiling fans or even stairs, he says.
Easy Street
If it’s not about the dust but more about the dirt, look for a sleek, lightweight vacuum. For a quick-and-easy clean-up job, the painless picker-uppers are those smaller and more compact sticks, Sandlin says. “They’re designed with convenience in mind and with cord rewinds.”
Clean it Green
Consumers don’t need to sacrifice quality for less energy consumption when it comes to green vacuums. Though eco-friendly vacuums are few and far between on the market, the ones available are highly efficient, Sandlin says. “They have smaller motors with the same performance level and take only a third or fourth of the energy consumption that other vacuums do.”
