Color Vision

Don't be afraid to color outside the lines - especially when it comes to outside décor

Details, details, details: While you may spend more time inside your home than in your yard, don't ignore the possibilities waiting beyond your front door. After all, what's a lawn without its accoutrements? Fun structural accents like a fountain or pieces of outdoor furniture stand out best in unexpected colors that can turn your garden into a personal oasis that your neighbors will envy.

Water fountains are a nice structural touch to any home's exterior, but they can get a little pricey. Instead of purchasing an expensive fountain for your garden you could use a wine bottle to spiff it up instead, suggests Alyssa Cassatto, a designer at Atlanta-based Stanton Home Furnishings.

"It's really simple. By cutting a hole in the bottom and running your fountain through the wine bottle, you can make a very interesting fountain," says Cassatto. She also recommends items such as water and metal buckets and other types of glass bottles.

Another way to incorporate interesting color outside your home is to rehab your current outdoor furniture. Most outdoor furniture comes in black or other dark colors, but Mar Jennings, a lifestyle and design expert based in Westport, Conn., recommends giving these pieces a lighter side with some paint or spray paint.

"I did this for a client on her rod-iron furniture and she loved it," Jennings says. "White is great, so is sage green and red lends itself to a bistro-look. You can always change it, so don't be afraid to experiment."

Changing the color of outdoor furniture also gives you the opportunity to play with patterns and textures in your choice of seat cushions. Jennings recommends painting Adirondack chairs in rainbow colors for a fun and whimsy look that really creates a splash of color.
