Take back your garden with these seasonal tips

Carolyn Hutchinson suggests some timely garden grooming ideas to refresh your plants for the rest of summer in her latest book, "Time-Saving Gardener: Tips and Essential Tasks, Season by Season" (Firefly Books, 2008)
*Use mulches or plant-pot reservoirs to keep vulnerable plants moist
*Prune back summer shrubs, such as deutzia, that flower on the previous year's stems
*Tidy the pond and thin out overcrowded oxygenators
*Feed permanent container plants
*Water lawn thoroughly, raise mower blades and removed grass bag to protect lawn from drought
*Protect crops from pests
*Prune apple and pear trees
*Harvest, then dry or freeze herbs
