Under The Sea

After tying the knot, take the plunge of Puerto Rican shores for a sweet escape

A honeymoon spent lounging around on tropic shores may be relaxing, but it could also be boring. Get active and explore those beautiful waters together by scuba diving or snorkeling.

Why it’s fun

Besides seeing each other in swimsuits and “refueling” with rum drinks, tooling around in warm, turquoise waters certainly won’t feel like work.

Best Bet Destination

Puerto Rico. It’s a beautiful tropical environment with some of the best beaches in the world and consistently perfect “summer” weather year-round, says Cori Ready, co-founder of The Adventure School, a Seattle-based wedding and event planning company.

Both new divers and old-hands will thrill at the opportunity to spot Bluehead Wrasse, French Angels, Batfish, Sea Horses, Coral Shrimp and Arrow Crabs. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, you don’t need a passport or visa to visit; you can use your U.S. driver’s license if you rent a car, and you don’t have to exchange money. Plus, it’s a short flight with tickets from New York ringing in at less than $100 each way, says Ready.

For even more sublime snorkeling, sign on for an REI cruise, lodge-to-lodge, or multi-sport tour in the Galapagos Islands. “All three options allow you to snorkel with a penguin, swim with a sea lion and come face-to-face with a giant tortoise,” says Justin Wood, a program manager for REI Adventures. And there are also countless opportunities to hike, bike and kayak.
